We are home to more than 120 residents over 65 acres located in NW Spokane, adjacent to Riverside State Park. Our mission is to save lives through rescue, education and advocacy. By treating animals as individuals and expressing both their wonder and plight through art, we foster empathy and understanding that leads to compassionate life choices.
The Volunteer Social Media & Newsletter Manager is an important member of our communications team. With a focus on the ever-growing world of social media, this person will assist in growing and maintaining River’s Wish Animal Sanctuary’s audience, deepening engagement across specific social platforms and email, and seeking new ways of building and connecting with audiences, while promoting our mission of saving animals lives through rescue, education, and advocacy.

The Volunteer Social Media & Newsletter Manager is an important member of our communications team. With a focus on the ever-growing world of social media, this person will assist in growing and maintaining River’s Wish Animal Sanctuary’s audience, deepening engagement across specific social platforms and email, and seeking new ways of building and connecting with audiences, while promoting our mission of saving animals lives through rescue, education, and advocacy.
Responsibilities:
Community engagement
- Stay up-to-date on social media platforms and trends popular among key social media audiences and recommend ways to implement
- Collaborate with Executive Director on building and growing our social media audiences
- Identify and maintain a list of mission-aligned social creators who would be appropriate to engage and collaborate with
- Evaluate other social platforms such as YouTube, Twitter and LinkedIn, and present ideas to communications and fundraising team
Content planning & curation
- Work with the executive director and co-founder on engaging stories to use for social posts and electronic news content—this could involve periodic visits to the sanctuary, if local
- Search through a wide variety of sources (internal photo albums, tagged social media posts, video archives) and develop a content calendar of shareable photo and video content
- Search the River’s Wish website and other internet sources for quotes, facts and stats to be used in social graphics and infographics
- Do a regular scan of news in the animal protection space, plus mission-aligned sustainability and social justice news; collect relevant articles for social sharing
- Create a social calendar for relevant holidays, events, fundraisers, and programs, and animal rescue stories that should be covered on our social platforms
- Create content for two monthly newsletters - one full edition with 3-5 pieces of content and one short edition that includes an animal interview or a special short content piece.
Publishing
- Write drafts of captions for daily posts across Facebook and Instagram
- Coordinate and publish the electronic newsletter
- Support Facebook event pages for River’s Wish Animal Sanctuary events
- Create and manage social content for the River’s Wish Sanctuary Store merchandise
Community management
- Monitor social media comments and inboxes and delete spam
- Acknowledge and respond to user comments and questions across all social platforms with pre-approved language, including thanking donors on social fundraisers
- Monitor social feeds for mission-aligned posts and creators to like, comment on, or share
- Alert the Executive Director to questionable or concerning comments
Ideal Qualifications:
- 2-3 years of relevant work, volunteer, or intern experience
- Strong understanding of social platforms, especially Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, and YouTube
- Experience with email content management systems
- Detail-oriented with strong writing and communication skills
- Ability to organize, prioritize, and meet deadlines while effectively managing multiple projects with creativity and flexibility
- Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- An interest in emerging social media platforms
- Basic image/video editing and graphic design skills, or the desire to learn
- Familiarity and commitment to equity, social justice, and River’s Wish Animal Sanctuary’s mission
Job Specifications:
- The expected time commitment is 5-10 hours per week, 5 hours per week minimum.
- This position is based remotely. Pacific time zone preferred.
- Some weekends and event coverage will be necessary.
